Signs you need professional drain cleaning

Signs you need professional drain cleaning

Slow drains, gurgling sounds, and recurring clogs are your plumbing telling you something. Here is when to call a pro instead of reaching for the plunger.

Most people do not think about their drains until something goes wrong. But drains give warning signs before they stop working completely. Knowing what to look for can prevent a messy backup and expensive water damage.

Slow drains that keep coming back

A single slow drain is usually a local clog — hair in a shower trap or grease in a kitchen line. But if multiple drains in your home are slow at the same time, the problem is likely in your main sewer line. This means tree root intrusion, a collapsed pipe, or a major blockage that a plunger cannot fix.

Gurgling sounds from drains or toilets

When you flush a toilet and hear gurgling from a shower drain, or vice versa, air is trapped in the line. This means a partial blockage somewhere in the system. The air is being pushed through the path of least resistance — usually the nearest drain. This will not resolve itself and will get worse over time.

Recurring clogs in the same drain

If you clear a clog and it comes back within a few weeks, there is a deeper problem. Store-bought drain cleaners dissolve hair and soap scum near the top of the line, but they do not reach blockages further down. Recurring clogs usually mean buildup on the pipe walls that needs professional hydro-jetting to remove.

Bad odors from drains

Foul smells from a drain mean organic material is decomposing somewhere in the line. If the smell comes from every drain, the problem is in the main line. If it is one drain, it may be a dry P-trap — run water in that fixture for 30 seconds. If the smell persists after the P-trap is full, you need professional cleaning.

Water backing up in unexpected places

If running the washing machine causes water to back up into a shower or bathtub, your main sewer line is partially blocked. This is a serious issue that will only get worse. Turn off the water and call a plumber — this situation can lead to sewage entering your home.

What professional drain cleaning involves

We start with a camera inspection to locate the blockage and identify the cause. For grease and buildup, we use hydro-jetting — high-pressure water that scours the inside of the pipe clean without damaging it. For root intrusion, we use a mechanical cutter followed by hydro-jetting. The whole process takes a few hours and leaves your drains flowing like new.

Do not wait for a backup

Drain problems do not fix themselves. If you notice any of these signs, call before it becomes an emergency. A scheduled drain cleaning costs less than an emergency visit plus water damage repair.
