30 Painter Websites Reviewed: Mistakes That Cost Enquiries
We audited 30 painter websites in the Boston/Malden area using a 12-point scorecard. Here's what we found.
The headline numbers
How the scores broke down
Each site was scored 0-24 across 12 categories. Here's where the 30 painters landed:
Not a single site scored in the top band. More than 80% were either leaking enquiries or only usable but weak. The gap between the best and worst was wide. Scores ranged from 2 to 18 out of 24.
The six problems we kept seeing
1. No website at all
What we found: Nine of the 30 painters had no owned website. Some had a Google Business Profile with photos and reviews, but nowhere to send someone who wants to see project examples or get a quote online.
Why it matters: Every searcher who wants more than a phone number goes back to Google and picks a competitor who has a site.
The fixA simple 3-page website, Home, Services, and Contact, gives people somewhere to land. It doesn't need to be complex. It needs to exist.
2. Facebook is not a website
The situation: Several painters listed a Facebook or Instagram page as their website. Social profiles are useful for showing recent work, but they don't rank in local search the way an owned site does, and you don't control the layout, load speed, or call-to-action.
Why that's a problem: You're renting your web presence from a platform that can change its rules anytime. You also can't optimise a Facebook page for 'painter in [city]' the way you can a real website.
What to do insteadBuild a basic owned site. Keep the social profiles for showing day-to-day work, but make the website the primary destination in your Google listing.
3. No before/after or project portfolio
What we found: Painting is one of the most visual trades there is. People want to see what you can do before they call. But nearly two-thirds of the sites we reviewed had no before/after photos, no project gallery, and in some cases no photos of real work at all.
Why it matters: A painter without photos is asking people to trust them on words alone. Your competitors who show their work don't have that problem.
The fixPhotograph every job. Before shots, during, and after. You don't need a fancy camera, a phone is fine. Organise them by project type: interior, exterior, commercial. Put them on a gallery page.
4. Generic page titles and descriptions
What we found: More than half the websites had page titles like 'Home', the business name, or nothing at all. Meta descriptions were missing on most. Google is left guessing what your page is about, and searchers see a random snippet instead of a clear pitch.
What that costs you: You rank lower for the services you actually offer, and the search results that do appear don't convince anyone to click.
Fix itEach page should have a title that includes your trade, your city, and your main service. Example: 'Interior & Exterior Painting in Malden, MA | Your Business Name'. Write a meta description that says what you do and includes a reason to call.
5. No tracking or analytics
What we found: Of the 21 businesses with websites, 14 showed no Google Analytics tag or equivalent tracking. They have no way to know how many visitors they get, where those visitors come from, or what pages they look at.
Why it matters: You can't improve what you can't measure. If you ever want to run ads, try local SEO, or even just know whether your site is working, you need tracking from day one.
The fixInstall Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console. Both are free. If that sounds like too much, at minimum get Search Console connected so you can see what queries bring people to your site.
6. No service-specific pages
What we found: Three quarters of the sites we reviewed listed all their services on a single page, or didn't list specific services at all. Interior painting, exterior painting, commercial work, and specialty finishes like wallpaper removal all got lumped together under a generic 'Services' heading.
Why it matters: When someone searches 'interior painter near me', your site has no page that matches that intent. Google ranks pages, not sites. No service pages means no chance to rank for those specific searches.
The fixCreate one page per service. Interior painting, exterior painting, commercial painting, wallpaper removal, specialty finishes. Each page should explain what's involved, show relevant photos, and have its own call-to-action.
What a good painter website actually needs
Based on everything we saw, here's the minimum bar for a painter website that converts visitors into enquiries:
How we did this
We reviewed 30 painter businesses from a scraped dataset of the Boston/Malden, MA area (ZIP 02148). Each business was scored against a 12-point scorecard covering first-screen clarity, service clarity, contact path, mobile usability, trust signals, local SEO basics, service-area content, proof of work, differentiation, speed/currentness, tracking readiness, and next-step confidence.
Scoring used publicly available metadata: website presence, page titles and descriptions, platform detection, tracking tags, booking/contact links, Google review counts, photo counts, and verification status. This is enough for pattern-finding and benchmark reporting, not a full manual UX teardown of each site.
No business is named in this article. The public findings are aggregated and anonymised. If you want us to check your own site, ask for a private review and we can send practical findings about your pages, contact path, and search setup.
